OCTOBER 1940

Tuesday 1

Fine, dull, very warm

Getting potatoes up.

 

Wednesday 2

Fine, dull, very warm.

Getting potatoes up.

 

Thursday 3

Fine, warm, dull.

Penrith Shorthorn Sale. Good trade.

Getting potatoes up.

 

Friday 4

Trying to rain all day, but didn't. Warm.

Getting potatoes up.

 

Saturday 5

Fine at first. Very strong S W wind. Terrible wet night.

Getting potatoes up. Among sheep.

 

Sunday  6

Very wet most of day. Fine till 11:30am and after 9pm.

 

Monday 7

Heavy showers later. Strong S W wind. Bright intervals.

Jobbing about. Took 11 sheep to Kendal.

6 lambs graded at 39 lbs 14½ per lb

4 H.B. ewes graded at 66 lbs 9¼ per lb

1 rough ewe graded at 54 lbs 10 per lb

 

Tuesday 8

Wet all day after 11am. S W wind.

Dipping tups for Sale on Sat. Sorting potatoes

 

Wednesday 9

Very wet all day. Terrible strong E to S wind.

Blown all pears off. Packing wool. Jobbing about. Bought 12 rough sheep 36/6 from Mr M Mawson, Orton.

 

Thursday 10

Very strong S W wind.

Sorting potatoes. On lots.

 

Friday 11

Fine, sunny, very warm

Finished ploughing Crow except hedging. Jobbing about

 

Saturday 12

Fine, sunny.

Edmondson's thrashing. At Wensleydale Tup Sale. Sold 5 shearlings and 1 lamb. Bought 2.

5¾ . 6. 6¼. 6¾. and 9½ gns. Lamb 3¼ gns.

Bought 3 pigs for 7½ and other for 3¼

 

Sunday 13

Fine, sunny. N E wind.

Let tup with Wensleydale.

 

Monday 14

Fine, bright. N E wind.

Ellwoods thrashing. Among sheep. Took Bridgehouse Tulip 28 to Auction. Sold her for £35

 

Tuesday 15

Fine. strong  E - S wind. Cool.

Getting potatoes up.

 

Wednesday 16

Fine, sunny, very warm.

Finished getting potatoes up. 2 carts of Mangolds.

O.D. 1 - 6

 

Thursday 17

Showers. No wind.

Among sheep. Let tup with Roughs. Shearlings off lots. Getting carrots up. ½ cart. 3 bags.

 

Friday 18

Fine, sunny, warm. Beautiful day.

Pulling Mangolds. 11 carts.

 

Saturday 19

Fine, dull. N E wind.

Pulling Mangolds. 16 carts. Wilson helping us with cart.

 

Sunday 20

Fine, sunny at times. Very strong N E wind.

 

Monday 21

Wet morning. Fine and sunny later. Very warm all day. No wind.

Haltering 2 bulls. Jobbing about. Pulling carrots, 5 bags full.

 

Tuesday 22

Fine, sunny, cold. N E wind.

Pulling mangolds. 14 carts. Took sheep to Kendal fat.

4 ewes graded at 64 lbs

7 lambs graded at 38 lbs

1 ewe graded at 41 lbs

 

Wednesday 23

Fine, dull, cold. Strong N E wind.

Wallers thrashing. Bought 18 lambs for Wilson 20/9 each.

 

Thursday 24

Fine, sunny, cold. Strong N E wind.

Finished pulling Mangolds. 14 carts. 58 carts in all. Pulling carrots. 7½ bags. Washing bulls

 

Friday 25

Fine, sunny, cool.

Kendal Bull Sale. Bridge House thrashing. Sold 2 bulls. 1 won 2nd prize sold for £26-10-0 and £18. Pulled 7 bags carrots.

 

Saturday 26

Fine, dull, cool. Strong N wind.

Getting brackens for Wilson. Pulling carrots. 6 bags. Wagon of lime came. Carting lime

 

Sunday 27

Fine, sunny, warm. Strong N wind.

 

Monday 28

Fine, sunny, warm. Strong E wind.

Carting lime. Another wagon. Pulling carrots. 6 bags. Cart of carrot tops for cows.

 

Tuesday 29

Fine, cold. Strong S E wind.

Carting lime. Another wagon. Pulling carrots. 5 bags. On lots. Cart of turnip tops. Pulled a few turnips. Started giving cows tops.

 

Wednesday 30

Wet early morning. Fine until 4.45pm, then terrible wet and wild. Strong S E wind.

Finished carting lime on Crow. 1 cart 2 rows along top of ??. Dipping sheep. Cart of carrot tops. Laid cows in. Total in 37 including young calves.

 

Thursday 31

Wet nearly all day. Strong S E wind. Rolling oats. Sawing wood. Jobbing about. Cart of tops, carrots and turnips.
